Union Berlin lose to rivals Hertha
U19 Bundesliga:
1. FC Union Berlin's Under-19 side went down 2-1 in the derby against Hertha BSC on Saturday.
Despite a strong second half performance from Toni Mandl's team, the Köpenick club lost out to last season's German champions. Union turned up the pressure on Hertha after the goal but couldn't pull back a second goal. Mandl concluded: "The team put in a strong performance today. The players had a lot of good chances, but unfortunately they didn't make use of them in the end."
Ruwen Werthmuller put the home side ahead on 21 minutes. But Union did well against the club, which is one of Germany's representatives in the UEFA Youth League. Ngankam hit the second on the counterattack, but Union did respond relatively quickly with Laurenz Dehl scoring on 58 minutes. Though Union played better in the final 30 minutes, Hertha held on to the points despite going down to 10 men.
Union XI: Oppermann; Alimler, Rankic, Sander, Inaler; Dehl, Gencel, Werner, Opfermann; Eidtner, Petermann
Next Saturday, the team is back in action against RB Leipzig. Kick off is at 12pm at the FEZ-Berlin complex, and admission is free for all supporters.
