Union Berlin battle to secure Hamburg point

1. FC Union Berlin returned from Hamburg on Saturday, claiming an impressive point in the U19 Bundesliga against HSV.

Union have made a strong start to the U19 Bundesliga campaign, winning three games from three. Although the Köpenick club conceded their fair share of goals, the performance defensively was strong. Union kept Hamburg to long-range strikes while the Berliners looked to use the possession to carve out chances in good areas. Neither teams could convert their opportunities in the first half.

A more open game developed after the restart, but the northern Germans found the breakthrough. Leo Oppermann was left unsighted at a free-kick, which was converted by Anssi Suhonen. Union Berlin recovered mentally and showed good character to fight back. In a period of sustained pressure which saw chances for Laurenz Dehl and Labroussis, Union finally equalised on 79 minutes thanks to John Liebelt.

"That was a such an intense match," said coach Andre Vilk. "For long periods, the defenders didn't give them much of a chance. At times, Hamburg had a somewhat larger share in the game, so we were also lagging a little bit behind. But by scoring ten minutes before the end, we achieved a well-earned draw."

XI: Oppermann - Labroussis, Rankic, Liebelt, Riecke - Veith, Haase (Gencel 33), Dehl, Maciejewski (Travassos 67), Aksakal (Ihbe 82) - Asllani
