Union Berlin battle to 0-0 draw with Leipzig
U19 Bundesliga:
1. FC Union Berlin fought hard to secure a point against RB Leipzig in the U19 Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon.
At the FEZ-Berlin complex, the Köpenick club seemed to start with a point to prove following last week's loss at Hertha Berlin. Union looked dangerous with the long ball and made life uncomfortable for the team from Leipzig. The visitors were more dangerous with possession play, but they couldn't make the breakthrough. Union's defence stood firm and won the personal battles before the ball entered the danger zone. Goalie Leo Oppermann had just the one save to make from the team in blue and yellow.
At the other end, Til Muschkowski latched on to a long pass but finished just past the post. Maurice Opfermann Arcones was sent off at the end, but Union held on to claim a well-earned draw.
Head coach Toni Mandl was pleased with his side's performance, which was rewarded with a point. "Even if the game ended in a draw, we are the moral winners. The boys played with so much heart and passion. The relentless will-to-win was there until the end."
XI: Oppermann; Alimler, Koch, Rankic, Sander (Opfermann Arcones 75); Dehl, Gencel, Maciejewski, Werbelow; Muschkowski (Möller 63, Werner 90)
On Sunday March 10, Union are back in action against Hamburg. The game takes place at 14:00 at the Wolfgang-Meyer Stadion.
