1. FC Union Berlin travel to Magdeburg on Sunday
U19 Bundesliga:
Sunday's game at 1. FC Magdeburg presents a good opportunity for the Köpenick club to secure its Bundesliga status at this age group for another season.
Last week's draw against TSV Niendorfer was a chance missed, but Toni Mandl's side can look at the next window to make sure of avoiding a relegation battle. Union are eight points above the drop zone, with three games left this campaign. "Anything can happen on the two final matchdays," said Mandl. "So it's time to focus all our attention on us and make things more consistent."
Union looked in control against Niendorfer, continuing an impressive run of performances which were not rewarded results-wise. A win at Werder Bremen ended an unlucky streak, but for the second game in a row, a 90th-minute equaliser for the opponent denied the Berliners all three points.
Daniel Eidtner struck early doors with a penalty kick — his 11th goal of the season. Leon Sitz added a second goal shortly afterwards as Union turned dominance into goals. The side from Hamburg, however, took more risks in the second period and found a road back into the game, when Alexandros Tourgaidis scored after 59 minutes.
Niko Kemlein was kept busy in the Union goal, but had to pick te ball out of the net on 90 minutes with Jephtah Asare equalising for the visitors.
Meanwhile, Magdeburg celebrated two wins in a row to stay above the relegation zone, in eighth place on 33 points. They beat VfL Osnabrück 1-0 at home before claiming all three points at TSV Havelse. "We're all looking forward to the game and the opponent. These are two teams who want to play attack and for the spectators it will be a joy. It's definitely going to be full of emotion."
Sunday's game starts at 12:00 at Heinz-Krügel-Platz 1.
