A Treat for May Day
Match preview
As part of the 16th Women's Football Day on 1 May, the women's team of 1. FC Union Berlin will host 1. FC Köln II in a friendly at the Alten Försterei. Kick-off is at 14:00 and admission is free for all visitors.
The opponents
1. FC Köln' U-23's recently returned to the 2. Liga following a five year absence, having won the Regionalliga West last season, and then the corresponding play-off against 1. FC Saarbrücken in a penalty shootout.
Things are especially tight in the 2. Liga this season, and though Köln II are currently 13th - second from bottom - with 17 points and a nine-point gap to the top of the table, they still have a healthy chance of staying in the league. Especially when you consider that the day before the Köpenick friednly, they are guests of the last-placed team in the table, 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam II.
Should head coach Sebastian Middeke's team win, the relegation battle could get even more exciting.
While 1. FC Köln II will be visiting Köpenick next Monday for Union's big family party, their senior women's team, currently 9th in the Bundesliga, had already celebrated a party of their own last Sunday, welcoming Eintracht Frankfurt to their home stadium in Müngersdorf, in front of a crowd of 38,165 spectators, a new record for the women's Bundesliga.
Service information
Well before kick-off, there will be a family festival for all Union fans, both young and old, around the stadium grounds. Starting at 09:00, visitors can watch exciting tournaments and various games on the Hämmerlingstraße training ground, let off steam at the bouncy castle or test their shooting at the goal wall.
